Design Elements:

• Sleek shapes, unadorned surfaces, straight lines, well lit spaces

• Combinations of wood with metal, concrete or stone

• Light, natural woods of cherry and maple

• Finishes in light and natural, deep ebony, or dark cherry

• Color infused glass or plastic in transparent, simple shapes

• Industrial kitchen influences of brushed chrome, stainless steel, hard edges

• Minimal accessorization - less is more

How to get "the look"

1. Blend the elements.

Compliment sleek wood finishes with stone, concrete or metal for an edgy, sophisticated look. Influences of commercial appliances and fixtures, such as brushed-chrome and stainless steel support the overall contemporary feel of urban style. Make it clean and serene. Leave uncovered functional details such as ducts, beams metal ceilings, even nailheads exposed. Use them as a design statement!

2. Black and white adds drama.

Bold color schemes are key. The all-white room is a standout, as is the positive/negative energy of the white and black interior. These are spaces just right for black-and-white photographs, uniformly mounted with oversized white mats and simple black frames of metal or painted wood. Color and shape come in the form of accents from unexpected sources such as halogen and commercial-style fixtures and lamps that serve as functional sculptures.

3. Neutral color schemes.

Perhaps a minimalist natural approach with quiet undertones defines the chic serenity that is your preferred space. Monochromatic (one-color) schemes provide a lighter feel to this usually hard-edged environment. The new look of neutral consists of barely-there color in lavender taupe, lilac cream, baby blue green, ocean gray or pistachio. Vary colors visual temperature by using two colors of the same intensity, one warm and the other cool.

4. Textiles contribute to the urban feel.

Although the lines are clean and tailored, fabrics on upholstery and bedding can be an experience in textural bliss. Luxurious chenille, edgy leathers, sumptuous faux animal skins, and modern ultrasuede can be applied by themselves or in combination with each other. Pattern is minimal, usually contained to geometric or stylized designs. The floor covering of choice is sisal over hardwood. Windows are either kept bare or a contemporary shade or blind is used for privacy.
