how to care for wood furniture
Common sense is the best approach when caring
for your furniture. Dust or vacuum your furniture regularly
to help maintain its beautiful appearance.
Always treat your furniture
like a treasure. Some objects may be unfriendly to furniture
finishes, so protect your furniture. Do not set hot or wet
objects on the surface. Use felt pads under lamps and other
decorative accessories placed on your furniture, avoiding
those pads with adhesives. Also, do not place abrasive materials,
rubber or plastic on your furniture.
Remember, when moving
your furniture even a few inches, to pick it up instead of
pushing or dragging it. This is especially important with
bedding. Always disassemble your bed entirely. Pulling or
pushing a bed even a few inches can cause splits and cracks.
Environment can be as
harmful to your furniture as it is to you. Protect your furniture
from sunlight, as well as excessively humid or dry air. Look
around before you decide on the best place for your furniture.
For weekly maintenance, choose a soft,
clean cloth - one you would like to feel next to your skin.
Spray cloth lightly with a quality furniture polish such as
Pledge or Guardsman, and dust your entire piece. Avoid polishes
with heavy oils and waxes.
As with all of your fine furniture, blot
up any spills immediately.
how to care for upholstered furniture
Common sense is the best approach when caring
for your furniture. Dust or vacuum your furniture regularly
to help maintain its beautiful appearance.
Arrange your furniture
with the environment in mind. Just as the environment can
be harmful to people, it can also damage your fabric or leather.
So protect your upholstery from sunlight, and excessive humidity
and dryness, by carefully choosing where your furniture will
be placed.
Remember to vacuum your
upholstery weekly. To thoroughly vacuum your upholstery, remove
all the cushions and draw the crevice attachment along the
edges, seams, and any recesses. This will remove the dust
and dirt, which can be pushed into your fabric weave through
daily use.
Every time you are cleaning
your furniture, flip and rotate any removable cushions, to
extend the life of your fabric and cushions.
Food products can spill and stain your
beautiful fabric, so prevention is the best defense. If a
spill should occur, blot it up immediately with a clean dry
white cloth. If the spill should become a stain, don't grab
a damp cloth…check the fabric's cleaning instructions
first! When one of life's little accidents occurs, review
the proper cleaning procedure for your particular covering.
You can find the cleaning code for Thomasville fabric-covered
upholstery either under the center seat cushion or on the
dust cover under the piece.
Code W
Clean this fabric with Water-based cleaning agents or water-based
foam to remove overall soil. Always pretest any cleaning solutions
in an inconspicuous place on your upholstery. Many household
cleaning agents are harmful to the color and life of a fabric.
Professional dry cleaning is recommended.
Code WS/SW
Clean this fabric with Water-based cleaning agents, foam or
pure Solvents (petroleum distillate-based products). Always
pretest any cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous place on
your upholstery. Professional dry cleaning is recommended.
Code S
Clean this fabric with pure Solvents (petroleum distillate-based
products). Always pretest any cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous
place on your upholstery. Professional dry cleaning is recommended.
CAUTION: Use of water-based or detergent-based solvent cleaners
may cause excessive shrinking. Water stains may become permanent
and unable to be removed with solvent cleaning agents.
Code X
Clean this fabric only by vacuuming or light brushing to prevent
accumulation of dust and grime. Always pretest any cleaning
solutions in an inconspicuous place on your upholstery.
CAUTION: Water-based foam or solvent-based
cleaning agents of any kind may cause excessive shrinking
or fading.

You can find the grade of Thomasville
leather upholstery either under the center seat cushion or
on the dust cover under the piece. The grade of the leather
determines its best care.
Grades 2, 4 and 5
Protection Cream (for Protected Aniline Leathers)
Protection Cream is a water-based protector for most leather
types except Nubuck. It creates an invisible, breathable barrier
between you and your leather and prevents stains from absorbing
deep into the leather. Protection Cream provides excellent
protection against oil-based, water-based and alcohol-based
stains and helps to resist the effect of everyday soiling.
It can also be used to remove small surface scratches. Always
pretest any cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous place on
your upholstery.
Grades 2, 4 and 5
Soft Cleaner (for Protected Aniline Leathers)
Soft Cleaner is a water-based cleaner that can be used on
most leather types. This mild, solvent-free cleaner will not
harm most leathers or affect its original properties or finish.
Soft Cleaner will remove most soiling and water-based stains.
For heavy soiling or dye transfer like blue denim from jeans,
you will need to use a stronger product, such as Strong Cleaner
or Super Remover (which are best used by a professional leather
cleaner). Soft Cleaner is also great to use in combination
with weekly dusting. Always pretest any cleaning solutions
in an inconspicuous place on your upholstery.
Grades 3, 6 and 7
Nubuck Cleaner (for Nubuck and Pure Aniline Leathers)
Use Nubuck Cleaner to clean water-based stains and deep soiling.
Always pretest any cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous
place on your upholstery.
Grades 3, 6 and 7
Eco- Protector (for Nubuck and Pure Aniline Leathers)
This water-based protects against oil-based, water-based and
alcohol-based stains. Eco-Protector is extremely easy to use
- simply spray a light coat and let dry. A second application
is recommended for seating areas. If over-sprayed, rub leather
with a clean dry sponge to return nubuck effect. Always pretest
any cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous place on your upholstery.
Nubuck Cleaning Cloths (for Nubuck
and Pure Aniline Leathers in Grades 3, 6 and 7)
These amazing cloths allow for easy cleaning of most soil
and for removing dark and shiny areas. Nubuck Cleaning Cloths
can also return flat areas to their original look and feel.
Simply unfold the cloth and wrap around a clean dry sponge,
then rub across the surface of the leather in multiple directions
to clean. Always pretest any cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous
place on your upholstery.

Thomasville puts a protective lacquered
finish on metal to prevent tarnishing. However, oil from your
hands or improper cleaning (such as metal polishes) can damage
this finish. If your protective coating has already worn off,
and your metal has begun to tarnish, continue to polish it
with a metal polish such as Hagerty, to hold its shine.
